For all us trekkies, we discuss a lot of things
about the show, including who was the best character. And I’ve had many
conversations as to who was the best leader.
I preferred Captain Picard. Cool under fire, intellectually
curious, deliberate in action yet capable of thinking fast. And he always
won.
But the one I most identify with is Benjamin Sisko, the
commander of Deep Space 9. He had a temper but became old enough to keep it in
check, most of the time. He had a cool deadly voice when facing danger. That
same voice became much warmer when he spoke to his young son—I like how he
cupped his hand behind his son’s neck and kissed the top of his head. And I appreciate how he loved his wife and
grieved for her after she died. Unlike
Kirk, he didn’t fall for every woman who came on the show. In time he came to
love one woman and committed himself to her.
I know, I know, it's just a show. There are those
who just don’t get it about Star Trek—please accept my nonjudgmental compassion
for your limitations.
Just kidding. Ha ha…. (throat clearing).
Regarding strength of character, I’ve known some women to
mistake a man’s temper tantrums as strength.
When I was growing up, the family lived in fear of my
father’s rages. I didn’t realize until much later that my mom sort enjoyed the
old man’s fireworks even while she feared him.
When I look at those years when he was a much younger man
than I am now, I see his rage for the childish tantrums they really were. I’ve
come to terms with that part of my past.
I can see that my father as an older man is also a better man, although
he’s never owned up to his jealous, bullying ways.
Captain Kirk reminds me of my father throwing a
tantrum.
We practice spanking and DD in our marriage, but I don’t use
it as a means of expressing rage. I use it as a means of leadership. I use it
to help Lynda become all she can be. Our home has become much more stable and
calm since we began.
I’m not always as cool as Captain Picard, but I’m usually
controlled like Commander Sisco.
Okay… I realize that I left out Captain Janeway. I thought
she was cool too. Anybody want to guess what she’s waiting for in this
picture?

Sisco is my favorite too, Mick, for all the same reasons. Although I did have a huge crush on Mr. Spock growing up. Live long, and prosper!
ReplyDeleteMick, I completely agree with you about Kirk.
ReplyDeleteI could never see him as captain either - for precisely the reasons you named. He just wasn't emotionally mature or stable enough.
Spock and Picard, on the other hand - calm and competent but still passionate leaders. (Never watched DS9 so can't comment on Sisko.)
chuckle: Janeway makes me think of .... wait for it ... Sara! She's smart, thoughtful, sexy, not afraid to take risks. I could certainly see Sara as a Starship captain.
Littlemonkey, Spock was a popular figure back then, and still today, although I think Leonard Nimoy is around eighty! Geez.
ReplyDeleteBronte, LOL. Darn if I didn't think of Sara, too when I considered Janeway. Sara, take it from us Trekkies, we're complimenting you.
Knowing the difference between rage, anger and leadership is always a good thing for an HOH. Thank you again for a great post.
ReplyDeleteCaptain Janeway needs no spanking, tough guy!..jesus. now every women you see,the first thing that goes through your mind is weather she is spankable or not?..*disturbing*
ReplyDeleteOkay, I don't quite get the Trekkie stuff, but my husband does and he'll enjoy this when he gets home tonight. The anger stuff...yup, I get it. My husband is very laid back but knows that he has an angry button. I've only seen it a couple of times in our entire marriage because he is so aware of it and he is crazy careful about control when it comes to Dd. For that I am very thankful! Bullies make for bad leaders. He doesn't need to be cool as a cucumber and I don't mind at all when he's ticked and decides to spank...lol...I can be really annoying sometimes! I do love that he thinks about what I need and never disciplines just to work out his own frustration. I think the fact that it resolves some of his own frustration is a nice side benefit for him though. ;)
ReplyDeletePicard is my man. Just love him. My Sir knows and he says Kirk will always be the one true Captain of Star Trek but he grew up watching Kirk as Captain.
ReplyDeleteI get to have fun teasing him when Star Trek comes on in reruns and it's Picard at the helm.
Have a wonderful day,
heather1
SAW, right. It knowing the difference makes all the difference.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous... lighten up.
Susie, it IS a nice side benefit.
Heather, I agree with you, but don't tease him too hard :).
No expressions of rage here anymore either. From either one of us. Dd has become a means of expressing dissatisfaction, and a refocus on the rules of our house and marriage. So, yes, I see how Capt.Kirk's temper was really not a productive form of leadership.
ReplyDeleteYou have me wanting to watch these newer series. (gotta check out Sisko) I know Jean-Luc, but the other newer ones, I don't. There are lots of different leadership styles, but Sisko's leadership style appeals to me more than the others, from what you describe.
It's good that you see your father's temper difficulties as *his* problem, and that you were able to come to terms with that and choose a better way. -E
Elysia, I'm glad to be reading on your blog that things are coming to an even better place than you were.
ReplyDeleteLove Sisko and Picard. I never thought I could love a captain more than Picard, but then Sisko grew up and wow was he smooth.
ReplyDeleteYou could do a lot worse for a role model. :)
Conina, true.
ReplyDeleteI'm no Treekie fan......at all! But I'd still whip Captain Janeway's butt good and proper! lol
ReplyDeleteGreat post.
Dy x
Wow...Captain Janeway? Thank you! I was gonna call you a trekkie geek, but I guess I'd better be nice now! ;)
ReplyDeleteYes, a good leader...not a bass, not a bully, but a true leader, has to be able to keep his/her cool under fire. It should be in the job description.
Sara
Dy, I swear you are one tough talkin' sub--LOL!
ReplyDeleteSara, trekkie geek? Well, yeah, but I try to keep it private, so let's all keep it to ourselves, Okay?
You're a trekkie geek !
ReplyDeleteSarah(with an 'h')LD,UK
Sarah (with an 'h') you have struck me to the quick!
ReplyDelete"Hi, my name is Mick and I'm a trekkie..."
"HI MICK..."
Susie's M here...
ReplyDeleteIt's interesting how much a 60's kind of guy Captain Kirk is... and how much a 90's kind of guy Picard (and Sisko) is. Janeway always struck me as cold... and I never even thought about how to "warm her up" (ahem).
I was always fond of Riker... I play(ed) the trombone too, and I'm certain I was just that good-looking and debonair (okay, so Susie is rolling on the floor at that one).
Ha! That's funny about the picture. I liked Picard myself. Who doesn't like a captain who can explore the universe, fight other species, friend other species, captian a crew gently but firmly and still be able to order 'tea...earl grey...,HOT'!!! LOL
ReplyDeleteKelly
Okay, my guess is she is waiting for a chair? Did I get it right? Is there a prize? ;)
ReplyDeleteSusie's M, debonair and good looking.... you too? Who'd of thought there were THREE of us?
ReplyDeleteKelly, tea? Make it so....
Stormy, you got it right the first time.
Spock girl checking in...be still my heart, I always go for the brainy ones...but you all forget, Cpt. Kirk threatened to spank Elaan in the episode called "Elaan of Troyius"
ReplyDeleteElaan: You are warned, Captain, never to touch me again!
Captain James T. Kirk: If I touch you again, Your Glory, it'll be to administer an ancient Earth custom called a spanking, a form of punishment administered to spoiled brats!
It was sort of the Taming of the Shrew in space.
Belle (who also thought Ricardo Montalban was pretty hot as Khan in "Space Seed")
Spock girl, I think I remember that episode--just because Kirk wasn't my favorite doesn't mean I didn't watch every episode.
